What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?
What is cognitive behavioral therapy and how can it help people overcome depression and anxiety?
Cognitive behavioral therapy is the number one researched therapy that has been proven to be effective for depression and anxiety. It is based on the idea that what people choose to think about on a regular basis has a profound effect on their mood. If someone constantly thinks negative thoughts this will eventually effect how they feel, what they do, and may even cause physical or somatic symptoms.
Therapists help people identify these negative thinking patterns and help them to increase their awareness of how often they are engaging in these types of thought processes. Once they have been able to accomplish this first step therapists help clients challenge negative thinking patterns and assist them as they learn to replace these NATs (negative automatic thoughts) with more balanced positive thoughts instead.
This is why Paul instructed us to consider our thoughts in Philippians 4:8 (NIV) “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” I always find it so interesting and comforting when science confirms the truth of the Bible! God is omniscient and he knows that if we allow ourselves to meditate on negativity it will cause us a multitude of problems.
